Cerved Sustainability Report
Lead Designer • Publication Design and Systems
Cerved's annual Sustainability Report was one of the final major projects I completed at ION. As Lead Graphic Designer, I was responsible for transforming a complex collection of reports, data, and stakeholder contributions into a cohesive 88-page editorial publication that communicated the organization's environmental, social, and governance initiatives.
What initially began as a one-week design assignment evolved into a six-month engagement spanning nearly 30 versions, extensive stakeholder feedback, international collaboration, and the creation of a scalable publication framework that would support future editions of the report.
Challenge
The project involved the creation of Cerved's annual Sustainability Report, a complex publication developed in collaboration with stakeholders across Italy. The content was initially produced in Italian, with plans to later migrate the publication into English, requiring a structure that could support localization without compromising design consistency.
Beyond the editorial challenge, the report evolved through extensive stakeholder review cycles and shifting content requirements. The goal was not simply to produce a polished publication, but to establish a scalable framework capable of supporting future reporting initiatives.
Approach
I approached the project as a publishing system rather than a single report.
Working within Adobe InDesign, I developed a flexible editorial framework built around reusable styles, structured layouts, and a robust document architecture. This foundation allowed the publication to accommodate evolving content while simplifying the eventual transition between Italian and English editions.
Close collaboration with teams in Italy informed the process throughout the engagement. By prioritizing structure, consistency, and adaptability from the outset, I was able to create a system that streamlined production, improved version management, and maintained a cohesive editorial experience despite ongoing revisions.
The result was a publication framework that could scale beyond a single report, creating long-term value for future sustainability reporting efforts.
Outcome
The final deliverable was an 88-page sustainability report that successfully communicated Cerved's ESG initiatives through a polished and highly structured editorial experience.
Beyond the publication itself, the project established a repeatable production framework that improved efficiency for future reporting cycles. The design system, document architecture, and workflow standards developed during the engagement created long-term value by reducing production time, simplifying localization efforts, and ensuring consistency across future editions.
What began as a short-term design request ultimately became an exercise in systems thinking, international collaboration, and large-scale publication management.
